The Wayland platform doesn't have visuals. By chance,
WL_SHM_FORMAT_ARGB8888 is zero, which means egl_get_config was ignoring
it and everything worked fine.
After discussing with Pekka and Daniel on #dri-devel, we concluded [1]
that user-space shouldn't need to force-probe connectors. Force-probing
can take some time, so using drmModeGetConnectorCurrent can result in
faster start-up.
Users can manually trigger a force-probe if necessary:
echo detect | sudo tee /sys/class/drm/card0-DP-1/status
Or just by running a tool like drm_info.
A similar change has been submitted to Weston [2].

Wait for a DRM device if none is found in wlr_session_find_gpus. This
can happen if the compositor is loaded before the display kernel driver.
This supersedes the logind CanGraphical property.

We're only interested in card devices. The loop over wlr_session.devices
would take care of ignoring non-card events, but a future patch will
listen to udev "add" events as well.
Instead of operating on FDs in {open,close}_device, operate on
wlr_devices. This avoids the device lookup in wlr_session and allows
callers to have access to wlr_device fields.
For now, we use it to remove wlr_session_signal_add and replace it with
a more idiomatic wlr_session.events.change field. In the future, other
events will be added.
We would always return the GAMMA_LUT_SIZE property if available, and
only fall back to legacy gamma size otherwise. This leads to issues if
both are available in differs in size while we use the legacy backend.
Ensure that we only return the legacy size if we're using the legacy
backend.

We have the policy of requiring up-to-date dependencies instead of
adding conditionals for older versions. libinput 1.14 was published more
than 1 year ago.
Every host seat with pointer capability propagates events to one of
sub-pointer depending which output window we entered.
active_pointer tracks reference to sub-pointer on enter/leave events to
avoid lookup for it on every move events.

This effectively gets swaywm/wlroots#1499 to the point where
functionality somewhat preserved and no crash happens.
We still can have only one cursor, but we can control it from multiple
seats in time-sharing manner by entering/leaving output.
When performing a modeset, the DRM backend will request a page-flip
event. However frame_pending wasn't set to true, so any subsequent
wlr_output_schedule_frame calls would imemdiately trigger a synthetic
frame event, asking the compositor to submit a new frame. Committing the
new frame fails with "a page-flip is already pending" error in the DRM
backend.
When an output is disabled one last pageflip will happen to disable it.
Currently this pageflip causes a frame event.
Since the output is disabled we don't want to send this frame event.
I'm not sure what this was used for, but it's not used by libwayland.
Setting _WAYLAND_DISPLAY would result in the Wayland backend being
picked but would ignore the actual value of the env variable.
When starting a compositor that's using the "direct" session backend,
wlroots needs to handle calls to `drmSetMaster()` and `drmDropMaster()`.
As both calls used to require `CAP_SYS_ADMIN`, wlroots thus simply
refused starting in case the process doesn't enjoy evelated privileges.
Permission rules have changed since linux.git commit 45bc3d26c95a (drm:
rework SET_MASTER and DROP_MASTER perm handling, 2020-03-19). As a
result, starting with Linux v5.8, both ioctls will now also succeed if
the process is currently or has been the DRM master. And as the first
process to open render nodes will become the DRM master automatically,
this effectively means that process elevation is not strictly required
in all setups anymore.
So let's drop the `geteuid() != 0` permission check to allow those new
rules to do their magic.
bad1e9afa8 ("session: Add libseat backend") introduced a change to to
how session backends initialize, but failed to update the FreeBSD
specific version of the direct backend accordingly.

get_drm_prop_blob does not set path_len if it returns NULL. Check the
return value before path_len to avoid reading uninitialized memory.
(Granted, this doesn't change the logic at all, but it does make
Valgrind a bit happier.)
drm_connector_set_cursor wasn't checking the return value of the
drm_surface_make_current call. On failure, this results in a failed
assertion in wlr_renderer_begin (because no rendering context is
current).
The output backend API is now mostly state-less thanks to the atomic
hooks (commit and test). There is one exception though: attach_render.
This function makes the rendering context current. However sometimes the
compositor might decide not to render after attach_render (e.g. when
there's nothing new to render to the back buffer). Thus
wlr_output_rollback has been introduced to revert the pending state.
Because the output backend API is mostly state-less, the only thing
wlr_output_impl.rollback needs to do is revert the current rendering
context. Rename the function to rollback_render to make this clear. Add
a check in the common wlr_output code to only call rollback_render when
attach_buffer has been previously called.
On the long term, we'll be able to remove attach_render and
rollback_render together.
This commit makes `get_current_time_msec` correctly return milliseconds
as opposed to microseconds. It also considers the value of `tv_sec`, so
we don't lose occasionally go back in time by one second. Finally, the
function is moved into `util/time.cc` so that it can be reused elsewhere
without having to consider these pitfalls.
This patch fixes this failure:

When the mode, status or buffer hasn't changed, drm_connector_commit was
a no-op. Because of this individual changes to the gamma LUT or adaptive
sync status were ignored (if committed without a buffer).
Instead, perform a commit to apply the changes.
A test commit doesn't apply the pending state.
The CRTC state will be populated again if the compositor decides to
perform a regular commit afterwards.
Previously, we only had the pending state (crtc->pending, crtc->mode and
crtc->active). This causes issues when a commit fails: the pending state
is left as-is, and the next commit may read stale data from it.
This will also cause issues when implementing test-only commits: we need
to rollback the pending CRTC state after a test-only commit.
Introduce separate pending and current CRTC states. Properly update the
current state after a commit.
retry_pageflip is now dead code, since drm_connector_start_renderer
isn't called anymore. It was previously called when enabling an output.
The name "retry_pageflip" was a little confusing because the function
retried a modeset and the timer wasn't set up while performing a simple
page-flip.
Let's just remove this altogether for now. We can discuss whether it's
worth it to bring it back. Should we only do it on failed page-flips?
Should we only do it on EBUSY?
If the atomic commit fails or is test-only, rollback
wlr_drm_crtc.{mode_id,gamma_lut} blob IDs to their previous value. This
prevents the next commits from failing or applying test-only state.
After swapping buffers, it doesn't make sense to perform more rendering
operations. Unset the context to reflect this.
This commit makes it so the context is always only current between
wlr_egl_make_current and wlr_egl_swap_buffers.
This is an alternative to [1].

When calling assert(0) instead of returning a value, -Wreturn-type
warnings are triggered because assertions can be disabled. Replace these
assertions with abort().
We already have the logic to fallback to the legacy interface above. We
just need to avoid calling atomic_add with a zero prop ID.

dealloc_crtc was destroying GBM surfaces, but the cursor_enabled flag
was left as-is. When re-enabling the output, atomic_crtc_pageflip would
try enabling the cursor plane, but would fail because no framebuffer is
available.

When an output is enabled and modeset at the same time,
drm_connector_commit would first try to modeset then try to commit. This
won't work because both will trigger a page-flip. KMS will reject that.
Change the logic to only enable an output if no modeset has been
requested. The logic in wlr_output already checks that the user isn't
doing a modeset and disabling the output at the same time.
We have a workaround for legacy drivers that support drmModeSetCursor
without exposing a cursor plane. It doesn't work anymore now that we've
moved to a more atomic interface.
Let's just remove this workaround and fallback to software cursors.

conn->crtc is NULL in case the output is disabled.
However, the DRM backend will set the GAMMA_LUT property anyway. On each
commit the whole state is sent to KMS. Adding WLR_DRM_CRTC_GAMMA_LUT to
the pending state would just make the backend re-create the blob
containing the gamma LUT.
We don't need a per-CRTC atomic request anymore. Let's make the request
per-commit so that it's easier to debug.
This is also groundwork for supporting wlr_output_test properly.
GAMMA_LUT_SIZE isn't an atomic property. It can be used with the legacy
interface too. So we can unify both codepaths and remove
wlr_drm_interface.crtc_get_gamma_size.
It's no guaranteed to exist though, so we still need to keep the
fallback.
When the headless backend uses an already-existing renderer, it doesn't
have ownership over the renderer. When the renderer is destroyed, the
headless backend needs to destroy itself.
The logs don't currently display the importance of a line. It's easy to
read "skipping page-flip" as a debug message instead of an error
message.
Change the error message to make it more explicit.

Reconnecting an external display fails on initial
page-flip. This occurs when the pageflip_pending flag
has been set on the connector at the time the monitor
is removed. Once the connector's CRTC has been deallocated,
page_flip_handler cannot find the connector by its crtc_id,
so pageflip_pending will remain set. This causes
initialization to fail when the monitor is reconnected
with the error messages:
Skipping pageflip on output 'X'
Failed to initialize renderer on connector 'X': initial page-flip failed
To fix this problem, clear the pageflip_pending flag
when cleaning up the connector.
This is simply a false sense of security, and is worse than just using
setuid. CAP_SYS_ADMIN is an extremely serious capability that is
effectively as powerful as root.
It also required users to be in the input group, which allows any
process to keylog the entire system.
Some primary planes don't support ARGB8888, they only support XRGB8888
(for instance on older Intel hardware). The DRM backend would fail to
initialize.
When that's the case, try to allocate buffers without an alpha channel.
This is a type which manages gbm_surfaces and imported dmabufs in the
same place, and makes the lifetime management between the two shared. It
should lead to easier to understand code, and fewer special cases.
This also contains a fair bit of refactoring to start using this new
type.

This commit doesn't fix any issue that I'm aware of, since sway
incidentally does not use these fields. Still, they exist, so they
should probably be filled in to prevent fun surprises in the future.
Most of the pending output state is not forwarded to the backend prior
to an output commit. For instance, wlr_output_set_mode just stashes the
mode without calling any wlr_output_impl function.
wlr_output_impl.commit is responsible for applying the pending mode.
However, there are exceptions to this rule. The first one is
wlr_output_attach_render. It won't go away before renderer v6 is
complete, because it needs to set the current EGL surface.
The second one is wlr_output_attach_buffer.
wlr_output_impl.attach_buffer is removed in [1].
When wlr_output_rollback is called, all pending state is supposed to be
cleared. This works for all the state except the two exceptions
mentionned above. To fix this, introduce wlr_output_impl.rollback.
Right now, the backend resets the current EGL surface. This prevents GL
commands from affecting the output after wlr_output_rollback.
This patch is required for FBO-based outputs to work properly. The
compositor might be using FBOs for its own purposes [2], having leftover
FBO state can have bad consequences.

Check that buffer can be scanned out in wlr_output_test instead of
wlr_output_attach_buffer. This allows the backend to have access to the
whole pending state when performing the check.
This brings the wlr_output API more in line with the KMS API.
This removes the need for wlr_output_attach_buffer to return a value,
and for wlr_output_impl.attach_buffer.
Consumers call wlr_buffer_lock. Once all consumers are done with the
buffer, only the producer should have a reference to the buffer. In this
case, we can release the buffer (and let the producer re-use it).
The logind provider defaulted to systemd and in order to use elogind,
-Dlogin-provider=elogind was required. This adds 'auto' as a choice
for the login-provider option and sets it as default. Using 'auto',
the build will check for systemd first and if it's not found, try
to find and use elogind automatically.
Previously, each time a wl_seat.capabilities event was received the
Wayland backend created new input devices. It now only does so the first
time.
Input devices are now destroyed when the cap is removed.

This function allowed backends to provide a custom function for frame
scheduling. Before resuming the rendering loop, the DRM and Wayland
backends would wait for vsync.
There isn't a clear benefit of doing this. The only upside is that we
get more stable timings: the delay between two repaints doesn't change too
much and is close to a mutliple of the refresh rate.
However this introduces latency, especially when a client misses a
frame. For instance a fullscreen game missing vblank will need to wait
more than a whole frame before being able to display new content. This
worst case scenario happens as follows:
- Client is still rendering its frame and cannot submit it in time
- Deadline is reached
- Compositor decides to stop the rendering loop since nothing changed on
screen
- Client finally manages to render its frame, submits it
- Compositor calls wlr_output_schedule_frame
- DRM backend waits for next vblank
- The wlr_output frame event is fired, compositor draws new content on screen
- On the second next vblank, the new content reaches the screen
With this patch, the wlr_output frame event is fired immediately when
the client submits its late frame.
This change also makes it easier to support variable refresh rate, since
VRR is all about being able to present too-late frames earlier.

The previous PR was overzealous in adding a finish_drm_surface call
which was also done by the caller. Remove the call and also move the
comment to the correct code location.
In some cases modesets fail if the planes are initialized with
modifiers. Since in this case possibly all planes need to reinitialized,
which is not possible in the current wlroots design, add an environment
variable for affected users.
Previously, an error on the remote Wayland display would result in an
infinite loop priting:

This happens when the remote compositor disconnects the client because
of a protocol error, for instance.
Handle wl_display_dispatch and wl_display_dispatch_pending returning -1
by terminating the local display and printing an error.
Previously, we just assumed submitting a new frame would make the
compositor release the current one. This isn't always the case, for
instance Sway retains old buffers when a transaction is pending. This
resulted in synchronization issues with clients writing in
front-buffers.
Fix this by un-referencing a wlr_buffer when the parent compositor sends
wl_buffer.release.
Tested by running a fullscreen mpv instance in Sway with the Wayland
backend.
This fixes a segfault in drm_connector_set_mode (mode = NULL).
This happens because we set wlr_output.enabled to true if the connector
is attached to the CRTC. When the user disables an output in the
wlroots-based compositor, switches to another VT (enabling the output),
then switches back, wlroots sets wlr_output.enabled to true but
wlr_output.current_mode is NULL.
We should consider not reading properties from KMS after a TTY switch,
disabling all connectors. However this may result in flickering (outputs
being disabled then re-enabled).

wlr_output.description is a string containing a human-readable string
identifying the output. Compositors can customise it via
wlr_output_set_description, for instance to make the name more
user-friendly.

Bumps minimum version to 0.51.0
- Remove all intermediate static libraries.
They serve no purpose and are just add a bunch of boilerplate for
managing dependencies and options. It's now managed as a list of
files which are compiled into libwlroots directly.
- Use install_subdir instead of installing headers individually.
I've changed my mind since I did that. Listing them out is annoying as
hell, and it's easy to forget to do it.
- Add not_found_message for all of our optional dependencies that have a
meson option. It gives some hints about what option to pass and what
the optional dependency is for.
- Move all backend subdirectories into their own meson.build. This
keeps some of the backend-specific build logic (especially rdp and
session) more neatly separated off.
- Don't overlink example clients with code they're not using.
This was done by merging the protocol dictionaries and setting some
variables containing the code and client header file.
Example clients now explicitly mention what extension protocols they
want to link to.
- Split compositor example logic from client example logic.
- Minor formatting changes
Previously, the path of TTY is generated using snprintf with %d format.
It works with TTY 1 to 10, but fails with TTY with greater number
because the number used in the name is in base 32 instead of base 10.
Since there is no standard function to convert a number to a string with
a custom base, this commit adds a function to do it.

Remove glapi.sh code generation, replace it with hand-written loading
code that checks extension strings before calling eglGetProcAddress.
The GLES2 renderer still uses global state because of:
- {PUSH,POP}_GLES2_DEBUG macros
- wlr_gles2_texture_from_* taking a wlr_egl instead of the renderer

functions in headers.

There are some serious issues when running this on a real X server, as
opposed to running this on Xwayland, where this was tested.
More investigation needs to be done into why these issues happen and if
our usage of the present extension is correct.
This is set to the value of wlr_output.commit_seq when the frame has
been submitted. This allows tracking presentation with more then 1 full
frame of latency.

Expose the remote wl_display, wl_surface and wl_seat used by the Wayland
backend.
This allows compositors to customize the Wayland backend and to have
more freedom. For instance a compositor might want to handle clipboard
and drag-and-drop from the remote Wayland compositor. Another compositor
might want to setup pointer constraints.
We just send relative motion events alongside absolute motion events.
Compositors can figure out how absolute and relative events are related
(e.g. whether they have been triggered by the same logical event) with
the frame event.
Makes use of the present extension to get notified of vsync, and not
require any stupid timer hacks. Also make use of the present version of
ConfigureNotify, because why not?
This allows wlroots based compositors to properly use graphic tablets
with the wayland backend.
This should be a decent quality of life improvement when working on
tablet related features.
Instead of checking that the path property is not 0 to determine if the
connector is an MST connector, check if the path contains the mst:
string.

libinput_event_touch_get_slot always returns -1 for single touch devices. Using
libinput_event_touch_get_seat_slot instead ensures that they are assigned actual
slot ids.
Also, this is what Weston does, so this change yields a more consistent
behaviour between different compositors.
Instead of waiting for the next pageflip, destroy the output immediately
since we can now handle flips for outputs which no longer exist.
Also demote the missing crtc on flip to debug.

This commit makes more output properties (mode, enabled, scale and transform)
atomic. This means that they are double-buffered and only applied on commit.
Compositors now need to call wlr_output_commit after setting any of those
properties.
Internally, backends still apply properties sequentially. The behaviour should
be exactly the same as before. Future commits will update some backends to take
advantage of the atomic interface. Some backends are non-atomic by design, e.g.
the X11 backend or the legacy DRM backend.

The documentation for wayland-server.h says:

Replacing wayland-server.h with wayland-server-core.h allows us to drop the
WL_HIDE_DEPRECATED declaration.
atomic and legacy now both pass the backend as the user data for the
pageflip event. We than retrieve the correct connector by matching on
the crtc_id passed to the page_flip_handler2.
Wlroots also requires the DRM_CRTC_IN_VBLANK_EVENT capability now.

The backend doesn't need to handle transform changes, since everything is done
in software. In fact, all of the implementations were all identical and just
set the transform.
We could add support for hardware transforms, but:
- This would require a different field (something like hardware_transform)
- Not all combinations are possible because there often are hardware
limitations
- The Wayland protocol isn't ready for this (in particular xdg-output, see [1])

The DRM subsystem needs a NULL modeset for connectors which disappear
from the system to disable the hardware pipes, otherwise the pixels get
rendered but are sent nowhere.
The atomic backend does the equivalent by removing the properties and
issuing a commit.

In order to support compositors running as systemd user units without display manager,
a mechanism for specifying session ID exactly must exist.
Checking for `XDG_SESSION_ID` mimics loginctl behaviour e95be7def2/src/login/loginctl.c (L856).
"/org/freedesktop/login1/seat/self" path triggers seat-finding code path in logind,
which currently relies on getting the session based on caller's PID.
This behaviour is deprecated in logind as it doesn't work eg. with systemd user units,
which run outside of user session.
We check for "seat0" in logind_change_vt() already as introduced in 47985d2dc5,
so hard-coding it here is not a problem, otherwise sd_session_get_seat() could be used.
When using the rdp backend and connecting with xfreerdp ... --rfx, wlroots
crashes in backend/rdp/output.c while attempting to realloc(..., 0).
This commit guards against that and instead returns true, resulting in
no rfx message being sent. This prevents the crash and appears to work, but
it's not obvious if this is correct from a specification perspective.
This appears to be a quick fix for compositors freezing when a dock is
disconnected. Disconnection of the dock is causing `pause_device` for
the DRM devices associated with the dock. Since these devices major
number is `DRM_MAJOR`, the session was being set to inactive. This just
makes it so the session is not set to inactive when the device's state
is `gone`.
This updates the backend part of the output API. This is mostly renaming:
make_current becomes attach_render and swap_buffers becomes commit.
This also fixes the RDP backend to support NULL damage.
The deleted includes are redundant, because other headers will include
the necessary files. Additionally, they cause build failures, because
including EGL/egl.h or EGL/eglext.h directly, instead of through
wlr/render/egl.h or wlr/render/interface.h, will mean that
MESA_EGL_NO_X11_HEADERS will not have been defined, and so the EGL
headers will attempt to pull in unnecessary X11 headers that may not
exist on the system.
For the headers produced by glgen.sh, the includes couldn't simply be
deleted, because no other header would include the EGL headers. Neither
wlr/render/egl.h or wlr/render/interface.h felt appropriate to include,
so I opted instead to copy the MESA_EGL_NO_X11_HEADERS definition before
the EGL includes.

If *changed_outputs is not supplied by the calling function, track the local
allocation with a bool variable and free the allocation at the end of the
function.
On DRM resume, such as switching back to a TTY, the output needs to be
modeset to the current mode. However, wlr_output_set_mode will return
early when attempting to set the mode to the current mode. This just
steps around wlr_output_set_mode and calls drm_connector_set_mode
directly.
There is no point in modesetting an output to a mode that it is already
set to. Modesetting will cause the output to briefly flicker which is
undesirable for a noop. This returns early in `drm_connector_set_mode`
when attempting to modeset to the current mode.
In order for a surface to be used as a cursor plane framebuffer, it
appears that requiring the buffer to be linear is sufficient.
GBM_BO_USE_SCANOUT is added in case GBM_BO_USE_LINEAR isn't sufficient
on untested hardware.

Removed wlr_drm_plane.cursor_bo as it does not serve any purpose
anymore.
Relevant analysis (taken from the PR description):
While trying to implement a fix for #1323, I found that when exporting
the rendered surface into a DMA-BUF and reimporting it with
`GBM_BO_USE_CURSOR`, the resulting object does not appear to be valid.
After some digging (turning on drm-kms debugging and switching to legacy
mode), I managed to extract the following error: ```

little-endian (0x34325241), modifier 0x100000000000001 ``` The format
itself refers to ARGB8888 which is the same format as
`renderer->gbm_format` used in master to create the cursor bo. However,
using `gbm_bo_create` with `GBM_BO_USE_CURSOR` results in a modifier of
0. A modifier of zero represents a linear buffer while the modifier of
the surface that is rendered to is `I915_FORMAT_MOD_X_TILED` (see
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/include/uapi/drm/drm_fourcc.h?h=v4.20.6#n263).
In order to fix this mismatch in modifier, I added the
`GBM_BO_USE_LINEAR` to the render surface and everything started to work
just fine. I wondered however, whether the export and import is really
necessary. I then decided to test if the back buffer of the render
surface works as well, and at least on my hardware (Intel HD 530 and
Intel UHD 620) it does. This is the patch in this PR and this requires
no exporting and importing.
I have to note that I cheated in order to import DMA_BUFs into a cursor
bo when doing the first tests, since on import the Intel drivers check
that the cursor is 64x64. This is strange since cursor sizes other than
64x64 have been around for quite some time now
(https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/mesa-commit/2014-June/050268.html).
Removing this check made everything work fine. I later (while writing
this PR) found out that `__DRI_IMAGE_USE_CURSOR` (to which
`GBM_BO_USE_CURSOR` translates) has been deprecated in mesa
(https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/blob/master/include/GL/internal/dri_interface.h#L1296),
which makes me wonder what the usecase of `GBM_BO_USE_CURSOR` is. The
reason we never encountered this is that when specifying
`GBM_BO_USE_WRITE`, a dumb buffer is created trough DRM and the usage
flag never reaches the Intel driver directly. The relevant code is in
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/blob/master/src/gbm/backends/dri/gbm_dri.c#L1011-1089
. From this it seems that as long as the size, format and modifiers are
right, any surface can be used as a cursor.
When a wlroots compositor runs as a systemd user unit there is no
session associated with the compositor process. Instead we need to
attach to an active and graphical user session.
This change first looks for an available session for the process, and if
there isn't one falls back to display in the oldest available graphical
session.

We create the EGL config with GBM_FORMAT_ARGB8888, but then initialize GBM BOs
with GBM_FORMAT_XRGB8888. This mismatch confuses Mesa.
Instead, we can always use GBM_FORMAT_ARGB8888, and use DRM_FORMAT_XRGB8888
when calling drmModeAddFB2.

Frame events group logically connected pointer events. It makes sense to make
the backend responsible for sending frame events, since once the events are
split (ie. once the frame events are stripped) it's not easy to figure out
which events belongs to which frame again.
This is also how Weston handles frame events.

Set the default "wlroots - " title when the title argument to the
set_title functions is NULL. Otherwise, for at least the Wayland
backend, we'd crash because xdg_toplevel_set_title doesn't handle a NULL
pointer.
When there aren't enough CRTCs for all outputs, we try to move a CRTC from a
disabled output to an enabled one. When this happens, the old output's state
wasn't changed, so the compositor thought it was still enabled and rendering.
This commit marks the old output as WLR_DRM_CONN_NEEDS_MODESET and sets its
current mode to NULL.
The noop backend is similar to headless, but it doesn't contain a
renderer. It can be used as a place to stash views for when there's no
physical outputs connected.
As evdev-proto is installed by CI some files have been missed:

Values from libdrm are likely more reliable than raw values from the EDID. We
were already using values from libdrm, but they were overwritten by parse_edid.

This commit changes `scan_drm_connectors` to add new outputs to the end of the
list. That way, it's easier to understand what's going on with indices.
When we need to destroy outputs, we now walk the list in reverse order. This
ensures indices remain correct while iterating and removing items from the
list.
We now also make outputs without a CRTC disappear (those are in
WLR_DRM_CONN_NEEDS_MODESET state).
The renderer redesign is going to need the render fd before the backend
is fully started, so we have to move the wl registry code to when the
backend is created instead of when it is started.
We also need to stash the wl_keyboard and emit it to library users
later, once they've added their listeners and started the backend.
There was a missing copy_drm_surface_mgpu call in drm_connector_schedule_frame
so we asked for a pageflip with an unknown BO, resulting in ENOENT.
Additionally, this commit makes schedule_frame return a bool indicating
failures. This allows schedule_frame_handle_idle_timer to only set
frame_pending to true if a frame has been successfully scheduled. Thus, if a
pageflip fails, rendering won't be blocked forever anymore.
In case a pageflip is already pending, true is returned because a frame has
already been scheduled and will be sent sometime soon.
This allows the legacy interface to be used instead of atomic if needed. This
is a workaround to make some Intel GPUs work (if this variable is unset) as
well as to make some AMD GPUs work (if this variable is set).
If a pageflip is pending before cleanup, it's still pending after. This
is used line 1177: drm_connector_cleanup is called and
conn->pageflip_pending is checked afterwards.

This prevents the idle event to be activated on a destroyed
output.
This also makes the backend responsible for free-ing modes, as it
is the one allocating them and adding them to the list. Note that
the DRM backend (the only one using modes) already frees them.
This desynchronizes our rendering loop with the vblank cycle.
In case a compositor doesn't swap buffers but schedules a frame,
emitting a frame event immediately enters a busy-loop.
Instead, ask the backend to send a frame when appropriate. On
Wayland we can just register a frame callback on our surface. On
DRM we can do a no-op pageflip.

When a pageflip is pending, we'll get a DRM event for the connector
in the future. We don't want to free the connector immediately
otherwise we'll use-after-free in the pageflip handler.
This commit adds a new state, "DISAPPEARED". This asks the pageflip
handler to destroy the output after it's done pageflipping.
Sessions can now be retrieved from a backend in a more general manner.
Multi-backend gets back its `session` field that contains the session
if one was created, removing the interfacing from multi backend with the
drm backend directly. This adds the possibility to use sessions even
without the drm backend.
It additionally fixes the bug that 2 session objects got created when
WLR_BACKENDS were set to "libinput,drm".
To allow vt switching without drm backend (and drm fd) on logind, start
listening to PropertiesChanged signals from dbus and parse the session
"Active" property when no master fd was created (this does not change
current drm backend behaviour in any way).
This commit allows outputs that need a CRTC to steal it from
user-disabled outputs. Note that in the case there are enough
CRTCs, disabled outputs don't loose it (so there's no modeset
and plane initialization needed after DPMS). CRTC allocation
still prefers to keep the old configuration, even if that means
allocating an extra CRTC to a disabled output.
CRTC reallocation now happen when enabling/disabling an output as
well as when trying to modeset. When enabling an output without a
CRTC, we realloc to try to steal a CRTC from a disabled output
(that doesn't really need the CRTC). When disabling an output, we
try to give our CRTC to an output that needs one. Modesetting is
similar to enabling.
A new DRM connector field has been added: `desired_enabled`.
Outputs without CRTCs get automatically disabled. This field keeps
track of the state desired by the user, allowing to automatically
re-enable outputs when a CRTC becomes free.
This required some changes to the allocation algorithm. Previously,
the algorithm tried to keep the previous configuration even if a
new configuration with a better score was possible (it only changed
configuration when the old one didn't work anymore). This is now
changed and the old configuration (still preferred) is only
retained without considering new possibilities when it's perfect
(all outputs have CRTCs).
User-disabled outputs now have `possible_crtcs` set to 0, meaning
they can only retain a previous CRTC (not acquire a new one). The
allocation algorithm has been updated to do not bump the score
when assigning a CRTC to a disabled output.
This commit implements device type discovery by calling two ioctls
(DRM_IOCTL_VERSION and EVIOCGVERSION) on the device. These iocts are
specific to drm and input devices respectively, therefore we can
determine the device type based on which one returns an error.
This commit handles better situations in which the number of
connected outputs is greater than the number of available CRTCs.
It'll enable as many outputs as possible, and transfer CRTCs to
outputs that need one on unplug.
This changes CRTC and plane reallocation to happen after scanning
DRM connectors instead of on modeset.
This cleanups CRTCs and planes on unplug to allow them to be
re-used for other outputs.
On modeset, if an output doesn't have a CRTC, the desired mode is
saved and used later when the output gains a CRTC.
Future work includes giving priority to enabled outputs over
disabled ones for CRTC allocation. This requires the compositor to
know about all outputs (even outputs without CRTCs) to properly
modeset outputs enabled in the compositor config file and disable
outputs disabled in the config file.
The VT the compositor was started from was not activated after exiting
the compositor, which resulted in arriving on a blank VT. This commit
fixes that by introducing a new field in direct_session struct that
stores the last active VT so that it can be activated in
direct_session_destroy.
This prevents receiving modesetting requests from the compositor
while we don't have the whole picture (ie. while we haven't yet
scanned all connectors).
This also makes connectors without CRTCs disabled (they can't be
enabled yet even if some CRTCs are free'd -- this is future work).
A few pedantic changes and unused variables (1-4), and genuine bugs (5,

If close_timeout != 0, but simulate_activity_timeout >= close_timeout,
the program would segfault at pthread_cancel(t1).
The major device number does not indicate the device type on FreeBSD,
and AFAIK the only way to differentiate between DRM, input, and other
devices is checking the fd path. This commit implements that.
The drmDropmaster and drmSetmaster calls are necessary, because the
implicit drop (that should occur when the DRM fd is closed) seems not
to be working in some scenarios (e.g. if you have a tmux session
running - maybe the fd is retained somehow by tmux?). This is a
problem, because once you exit the compositor, you can't start it (or
any other program that wants to be DRM master) again until you close
all your tmux sessions.
On some systems (most notably laptops with two GPUs) there are GPUs that
don't have attached outputs. However, we still want to load those GPUs
because they could still be used by the compositor for rendering.
All screens on secondary GPU in multiple GPU configurations
was flipped 180.
The flipped screens was always on secondary card (the primary card
was always correct).
Tested on nouveau with:

The commit is fixing this problem. Now all screens are "normal".
backend_get_renderer() is now returning the renderer of the primary GPU, instead
of its own renderer, since that's the thing which actually does all of the "real"
rendering
wlr_multi_backend_add() is now adding all subbackends (otherwise only one GPU
is handled).

The previous naming was based on the input-device capability names from
libinput.
With code that uses the libinput_tablet_tool and mapping into tablet-v2,
this is confusing, so the name is changed to follow the names used in
the protocol.
This adds the management code to manage tablet tools lifetimes from
libinput.
It follows the suggestion made in the tablet-unstable-v2.xml to destroy
tablet_tools once all tablets that it got into contact with were removed
from the system. This is implemented via a refcount.
If a tool is *not* unique, it will be destroyed on proximity out. This
is libinput specific and mentioned in libinput docs that tools will not
be found again, so we shouldn't keep a reference to them.
Also they can't be on other tablets as well, because they cannot be
tracked.
The naming in this commit is a bit off (to not break things).
The wlr names stay the same, tablet_tool is the libinput_device with
capaiblity LIBINPUT_DEVICE_CAP_TABLET_TOOL which is more akin to
"tablet" in the tablet-unstable-v2 protocol.
The struct that corresponds to the tablet_tool in tablet-unstable-v2 is
called tablet_tool_tool, a rename should be done at some point in the
future.
Otherwise running under Xvfb will not deliver any events. This results
in e.g. weston-info reporting a 0x0 window size (which results in all
sorts of problems).
We cannot handle just one of the two being NULL later down the road
(e.g. divide by zero in matrix projection code),
just ignore any such configure request.

The test was done after dereferencing output in pointer_handle_enter,
just move it up one line.
No reason pointer_handle_leave would not need the check if enter needs
it, add it there.
Found through static analysis.
These operations are done in 32-bit arithmetics before being casted to 64-bit,
thus can overflow before the cast.
Casting early fixes the issue.

recvmsg(3) returns 0 if the connection partner has shut down its socket.
The communicate function considered 0 a successful message, though, and
keeps calling recvmsg(3) again and again.
Compositors now have more control over how the backend creates its
renderer. Currently all backends create an EGL/GLES2 renderer, so
the necessary attributes for creating the context are passed to a
user-provided callback function. It is responsible for initializing
provided wlr_egl and to return a renderer. On fail, return 0.

Updates the projection matrix for the cursor plane in the DRM backend,
when the cursor is set, so new cursor are uploaded with the correct
transformation.
This changes the `wlr_output_impl.set_cursor` function to take a
`wlr_texture` instead of a byte buffer. This simplifies the
DRM and Wayland backends since they were creating textures from
the byte buffer anyway.
With this commit, performance should be improved when moving the
cursor since outputs don't need to be re-rendered anymore.
When the X11 server sends an expose event, that means that "this
rectangle here (the event contains x,y,width,height) has undefined
contents on your window; please redraw that". This means that we need a
swap. However, so far the code does not actually enforce that a swap
happens.
For example, start rootston, switch to another workspace and then switch
back. The rootston window will not be redrawn (before commit
52b058c2a3, it would just be fully white; after that commit it will
show whatever was visible on the old workspace). This is because the
drawing code concludes that nothing needs to be done. However, in fact a
swap is necessary.
This reverts commit e79d924588, because its optimisation is already
done now: wlr_output_update_needs_swap() emits a signal, which is
handled by wlr_output_damage with a call to wlr_output_schedule_frame().
This function does nothing if a frame is already pending. Thus, the
optimisation from commit e79d924588 now happens implicitly.

When resizing rootston with the mouse, the result is really slow. One
can see that rootston needs quite a while for drawing the newly visible
area. This is because every single expose event is handled on its own
and causes (apparently) a full repaint or at least a swap.
This commit improves things by only causing a new frame if none is
pending already.
With this change, there is almost no delay in rootston drawing the newly
visible area.

Before this commit, the x11 server would fill any exposed area with
white before the wlroots x11 backend got a chance to do anything. This
was e.g. visible when running rootston and resizing the window: When the
window becomes larger, the new area is filled with black.
By just not setting a back pixel value, this commit gets rid of this
behaviour.

XGetXCBConnection(), is created by XOpenDisplay(), and is owned by the

xcb_disconnect() is called again and frees the same data again (glibc would
detect a double free). However, XCloseDisplay() tries to clean up some internal
caches first for which it has to send requests to the X11 server (e.g. the
XFreeGC() above). This fails since the file descriptor was already closed,
which causes an IO error. Xlib's _XDefaultIOError() handles this by printing an
error message and calling exit(1).
Thus, the only symptom of this problem was compositors exiting
mid-shutdown and printing an error message:
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0"
after 6 requests (6 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

- Textures are now immutable (apart from those created from raw

The current mode was set to NULL to abuse it as state variable
persisting DRM suspend/resume, this results resulted in a segfault on
normal DPMS cycle.
This reverts that change and uses the wlr_output enabled variable, which
also persists and makes more sense.
Legacy gamma lut size now uses the new legacy_crtc member of
wlr_drm_crtc. This was Previously doen using old_crtc in
wlr_drm_connector, but since this refers to the crtc that was connected to
the ouput, this could give the wrong result.
On the drm output the wlr_drm_connector structs are reused.
This struct contains the wlr_output struct, which is reused as well.
The old code kept modes/edid and output state persistent over hotplug.
This nulls the relevant strings, reads newer edid data and removes old
modes on unplug.
The backend destroy signal is emitted before the output_remove
signal is. When the destroy signal is emitted listeners remove
their output_remove listener, so the output_remove signal is never
received and listeners have an invalid output pointer.
The correct way to solve this would be to remove the output_remove
signal completely and use the wlr_output.events.destroy signal
instead. This isn't yet possible because wl_signal_emit is unsafe
and listeners cannot be removed in listeners.
The wlr_drm_surface_init function is called (upon others) when the drm
mode is changed.
When the surface was used previously this replaced the gbm_surface, but
did not replace the gbm buffers (front/back).
With this, wlr_drm_surface_get_from never set up the new buffers with
the new glViewport because surf->front existed.
This frees the buffers to get new buffers on the new surface with the
new viewport.
Right now, we are adding systemd and elogind backends to the build
system as soon as their libraries are found on the build system.
Instead, we should only add them if the libraries have been found _and_
the user has actually requested them to be included.

This backports some changes to #319 to fix the screenshooter data
format. This also adds wlr_backend_get_renderer which will be
useful to support multiple renderers.
This adds back `wlr_output::needs_swap`. This allows a backend to
request buffer swaps even if the output isn't damaged. This is
needed by the DRM backend to trigger pageflips when the cursor
moves.
